Triumph TR5 Books and Sources

The factory's brochure, the road tests, newsletters, club records, books and results tables behind every page of this site, with what each is good for and how far to trust it.

About the pictureA TR5 PI photographed in 2014, standing in for a page of the factory's brochure.

The earliest source on the TR5 itself is the factory's own brochure for Italy, printed in October 1967, the month the TR5 PI was shown in London; the period test the pages cite most is Motor Sport's of August 1968. Every source the pages cite is in the list below, from the factory's papers to the results tables, each with its address printed as plain text, and each page lists its own sources at its foot.source 1source 2

How the sources are graded

The label beside each source in the list grades the kind of source it is, not every line in it. Primary sources were made at the time, by the maker or by people who were there: the brochure, Motor Sport's reports and the American importer's monthly newsletter, which was partisan but written as things happened. Reference sources are later work done with care: the clubs' guides, the specialists' notes, and the historians' books and articles. Database sources, such as the racingsportscars results tables, are read one entry at a time.

Unchecked sources are leads: Wikipedia, sale catalogues and sites that seldom name their own sources. A page uses one only beside a stronger source or by naming it in the sentence, as with a sale catalogue on what a car was.source 3source 4source 5source 6

The maker's own words

The factory's Italian brochure of October 1967 is the closest thing on these pages to Standard-Triumph speaking for itself: its data panel gives the TR5 PI's dimensions, weights and capacities, its drawings explain the hardtop and the Surrey top, and its first line makes Triumph's claim for the injection. It gives no power figure.source 1

Magazines and newsletters of the time

Motor Sport's archive is the backbone of the period record: its report from the 1967 show, its test of the rival MGC in March 1968, explaining why no TR5 could be borrowed for a test, its own TR5 test of August 1968 and its reports of 1968 and 1969. Car and Driver's cover story on the TR250K, in April 1968, has Kas Kastner in his own words. The American importer's newsletter, the TSOA Newsletter, gives the TR250's price, its racing season race by race and the TR250K before and after Sebring, and Popular Science in 1969 set the TR250's successor against its rivals. The other period tests known are listed, with what is known of each, on road tests.source 7source 8source 2source 9source 10source 11source 12source 13source 14source 15

Clubs, registers and specialists

The TR Register and the TR Drivers' Club give the production figures and the clubs' own performance figures; the Vintage Triumph Register's TR250 production notes, by Drew Holliday, are the most detailed account of the American car that the research read, and its buyer's guide, by Steve Gronau with David Webb, the most detailed on what to check. The TR-Register Deutschland's guide, by Bruno Dwinger, adds the German prices and much on buying. tr5passion.com, a French site devoted to the TR5, is the main source for the Belgian-assembled cars, the Ginevra and the European rallies, the last from what drivers told Frédéric Reydellet. Rimmer Bros' parts catalogue for the TR2 to the TR250 adds a production table and a list of commission numbers, with an essay by Graham Robson, and Revington TR's notes, Moss Motors' identification table and the British Motor Museum's Heritage Certificates complete the identification.source 16source 17source 18source 19source 20source 21source 22source 23source 24source 25

Books and later accounts

The most used later account is Aaron Severson's history of the TR5, TR250 and TR6 on Ate Up With Motor, of 2012, which gives the reasons for the TR250, the prices and ratings, and an index of the period tests. Michael Richards's Triumph TR4, 5, 6 (1990), Chris Harvey's TR for Triumph (1983) and James Taylor's Triumph TR are cited from passages of their text, for the Wasp prototypes, the testers and the American engine. Graham Robson's articles in Moss Motoring place the TR5 among Harry Webster's work and the TR250 in Triumph's American range; Peter Brock's own article of 2020 tells the TR250K's story from inside. Edgardo Michelotti's account of his father's Ginevra, given to the Italian motoring historians' society AISA in November 2023, comes from the designer's family. The American racing results come from the racingsportscars tables and the importer's newsletters together.source 26source 27source 28source 29source 30source 31source 32source 33source 34
