How the pictures were chosen

Every picture here may be reused freely: each is in the public domain or under a Creative Commons licence. Most come from Wikimedia Commons and the rest from Flickr; one of the Commons pictures, of Jean-Jacques Thuner in 1958, is Willy Pragher's, from the archive of the state of Baden-Württemberg. Most of the licences ask for a credit, so each picture carries one wherever it is shown, and the list below gathers them. Every picture appears as its source published it, though a frame may crop it; on two, the photographer had blanked the number plate.

Some pages show a stand-in, and its caption says what it shows and that it is not the subject; a stand-in at the head of a page is also labelled "Stand-in" on the picture and at the start of its caption.
