Triumph TR5 Specs

The TR5 PI and the TR250 side by side: one body, one frame and one six-cylinder engine, fed by injection or by carburettors. Every figure here is as a factory brochure, a road test or a club recorded it, and where they disagree the tables say so.

The TR5 PI and the TR250 were one car with two fuel systems. They shared the TR4A's body and its separate frame with independent rear suspension, and the same six-cylinder engine; the TR5 PI had Lucas petrol (fuel) injection and higher compression, and the TR250 two carburettors, lower compression and the TR4A's axle.

The comparison sets the two side by side, values only. Each value is the better-supported reading; a small asterisk beside one opens a note with the other figures in print and who gives them, and the "i" by each table lists its sources. The sections below explain the figures that need it, and give in tables the details the comparison does not hold.source 1source 2source 3source 4

Engine

The six is cast iron, block and head, with four main bearings and pushrod-operated valves. Its bore and stroke and its capacity are in the comparison; the TR250's differs from the TR5's in what it breathed through, how hard it was pressed and its camshaft, and Chris Harvey writes that the heads' ports differ too.

Power and torque, every reading with its basis

Triumph quoted one power figure for the TR5, and Motor Sport printed it as quoted:

With this system, the TR5's engine produces a quoted 150 b.h.p. at 5,500 r.p.m.

D. C. N., Motor Sport, August 1968

No period source read says on what basis it was measured, and the factory's own Italian brochure of October 1967 gives no power figure at all. The other readings are later. Aaron Severson gives a lower figure, which he calls net. A German guide from the TR Register in Germany says that German registration papers gave a figure in PS, the metric horsepower. And the same engine was later rated lower in brochures for the TR6 PI, as Motor Sport reported in 1973; that is a rating of the TR6, not of the TR5. The comparison leads with Triumph's figure, and its note gives the others with their sources.

The TR250's engine has two figures in print, and Severson explains them: the lower is net and the higher gross, and the same goes for its torque. The clubs print one of the two power figures, at the same engine speed, without saying which. The TR5's torque, Triumph's figure, is the same in Motor Sport's show report of 1967, its test of 1968 and the TR Register's facts; Wikipedia gives a lower engine speed for its peak, which no other source read supports.

Transmission

The gearbox (transmission) had four speeds, all with synchromesh, and a diaphragm-spring clutch worked hydraulically. Laycock de Normanville's A-type overdrive was an option, working on second, third and top; a car built with it carries O in its commission number. The TR250 kept the TR4A's axle, lower geared than the TR5's.source 2source 1source 5source 6source 4

Chassis, suspension, steering, brakes

The frame is the TR4A's: in the Italian brochure's words, box-section side members braced by a cross ("lungheroni laterali a sezione scatolare rinforzati da un tirante a croce"). At the front were unequal double wishbones, coil springs and telescopic dampers, and no anti-roll bar: Severson calls the TR6's the first on a production TR, and the factory's own description of the TR5 has none (TR5 vs TR6 answers the story that it had one). At the back, semi-trailing arms and coil springs worked with lever-arm dampers, which the brochure calls piston-type. Motor Sport's "co-axial coil-spring/damper units" for the rear, in its test of 1968, is a slip: the factory and the TR Register both describe lever-arm dampers. The rear springs were stiffer than the TR4A's.

Steering was by rack and pinion. Motor Sport counted 3¼ turns from lock to lock and tr5passion.com gives 3½, and the brochure's figure is too blurred to settle it; the brochure's three-spoke steering wheel was 41 cm across, a little more than tr5passion.com gives. The turning circle was 10.1 m between kerbs by the brochure and 33 ft by the VTR. The brakes had a servo and, as Motor Sport reported from the 1967 show, tandem master cylinders; their sizes are in the comparison. The TR250 had a brake-failure warning, as the left-hand-drive TR5 did by the brochure, and added a brace for the steering rack and a second stud on each front lower wishbone (TR250).source 1source 2source 8source 9source 4source 6source 3

Wheels and tyres

Steel disc wheels with Rostyle-style covers were standard on both cars, and 60-spoke wire wheels an option. The TR5's radials were Michelin XAS or Dunlop SP41 by the factory's brochure, and Motor Sport's test car ran on XAS. The TR250's were wider, and the VTR and Severson give them different speed ratings; the comparison's note gives both. tr5passion.com gives the TR5's tyre pressures as 1.54 kg/cm² at the front and 1.82 at the back, and adds that a hardtop car weighed about 25 kg more than an open one.source 1source 2source 3source 4source 6source 12

Dimensions, weights and capacities

The comparison gives the length, width, wheelbase, height, ground clearance, weights and fuel tank. The Italian brochure gives more, and the TR250's tracks come from the VTR:

The TR5's weights in the comparison are the brochure's, and it says what each includes: the dry weight is without extras, and the kerb weight with tools, fuel, oil and water. The two figures for the rear axle's oil disagree, and no source read settles them.

Performance

Triumph claimed a top speed for the TR5 at the 1967 show, and its Italian brochure gave the same in kilometres an hour, with a second, lower figure blurred on the page; the comparison gives the claim. The brochure also claimed 6.5 seconds from rest to 80 km/h, and in top gear 7 seconds from 48 to 80 km/h, 7 from 64 to 96 and 8 from 96 to 128; tr5passion.com adds 30 seconds for the standing kilometre.

Of the period road tests, only Motor Sport's has been read in full. It recorded 21.8 mpg (imperial) over its test, between 17 and 25 mpg as it was driven, and its acceleration figures, which are not in the archive's text, beat the factory's:

When we took our acceleration figures a high and very changeable wind was blowing, and this may explain why our figures were slightly better than those which the manufacturers claim.

D. C. N., Motor Sport, August 1968

The figures from Motor, Cars & Car Conversions and Sports Car World reach us only through Wikipedia (road tests). The TR Register and the TR Drivers' Club each print a time from rest to 60 mph without naming a test, and the two differ; the comparison gives both. For economy the TR Register gives the TR5 19.6 mpg and the TR Drivers' Club 22.5, neither saying which gallon; for the TR250 the TR Register gives 27.5 mpg and the TR Drivers' Club 25, again without saying, and the VTR 23.5 US mpg.source 8source 1source 2source 9source 14source 3source 6

Colours and trim

The TR5 and TR250 were offered in the same colours, and the list rests on the VTR and tr5passion.com:

Paint, with its codeTrim
New White (19)Black; Matador Red
Conifer, Triumph Racing Green (25)Black; Matador Red; Light Tan
Wedgwood Blue (26)Black; Midnight Blue
Signal Red (32)Black
Jasmine Yellow (34)Black; Light Tan
Royal Blue (56)Black; Shadow Blue
Valencia Blue (66)Black; Light Tan; Shadow Blue
BlackBlack; Matador Red; Light Tan

Black was available on the TR250, both sources say, and the VTR adds that it may have been offered, very rarely, on the TR5. tr5passion.com suggests that other colours from Triumph's chart may have been used, especially on the Belgian-assembled cars. The seats were in Ambla, with leather an option that was rarely ordered; the hood was black or white, the hardtop black, white or the body colour, and the Surrey top's fabric black or white (Surrey top). The dashboard was in wood with a dull finish, which Motor Sport's tester disliked.source 3source 6source 4source 2
